Decibel meters measure the true loudness of a sound wave. Human ears are designed to hear certain frequencies more clearly than others. Due to this fact, humans don't always perceive the loudness of a sound as accurately as a mechanized set of ears. We use decibel meters to accurately record the true loudness of a sound source without any prejudice to the frequencies that seem louder to the human ear.

To make life a little more confusing, decibel meters have two different modes for measuring sound. The "A" weighted mode is useful for general noise level measurement. If you are measuring a sound with more low frequency information, use the "C" weight. All of our decibel meters can be switched from A to C weighting at the push of a button.
